Abstract
By the end of this chapter you will:
• Be able to critically examine how definitions of crime and criminal have changed over time.
• Understand different methodological approaches to the study of crime in the past, including using quantitative and qualitative forms of data, and intellectual trends such as ‘social history’ and ‘cultural history’ approaches.
• Be able to analyse how histories of policing and regulation are connected to histories of crime.
• Be able to assess the merits of a ‘case study’ approach, exploring the nature of ‘criminal celebrity’ in the past through the lens of Jack the Ripper.
