How do we identify students who require support in mathematics?

    Abstract

    We discuss the problems of identifying those students who are at risk of failing the mathematical parts oftheir physics degree. A detailed analysis of A-level module scores, diagnostic tests and their impact on futureperformance is given. We show that it is challenging to identify underperforming or at-risk students withoutmaking just as many incorrect identifications.
