How to subtitle ethnographic films: some practical notes

Research output: Contribution to journalArticlepeer-review

Abstract

The use of subtitles is commonplace in ethnographic film-making and yet the skills and time required for subtitling to be carried out effectively are often underestimated. Given the current prevalence of subtitling, it is surprising that there are very few instructional texts that consider both the mechanics of the process and the many challenging issues thrown up by the need to translate sometimes complex statements within the restricted time frame that subtitling allows. Based on the author’s many years of experience as a teacher of ethnographic film-making, this article is offered as an attempt to remedy this gap in the pedagogical literature.
