Abstract

The Bengali politician Subhas Chandra Bose was one of the protagonists of India's fight for independence. Between the 1930s and 1940s, he sojourned at length in Europe, where he was able to observe the epochal political experiments that were taking place at the time, and promote the cause of India's independence. The ties he established with Fascist Italy and with Nazi Germany prove to be particularly interesting. Was it sincere agreement with the ideologies promoted by the two regimes, or a move dictated by mere strategic opportunism?
Historiography has shown a double standard in regard to Bose’s relations with Fascist Italy and Nazi Germany: on the one hand, he has been portrayed as a mere supporter of Nazi-Fascim interested in replicating in India an analogous totalitarian regime; on the other, the contacts he had with Italian and German governments have been resized ad hoc in order to weaken their impact.
Through an accurate historical reconstruction of Subhas Chandra Bose's sojourns in Italy and Germany, this text aims to analyze the relations between the Bengali politician and the Italian and German governments, as well as the influences of Fascism and Nazism on sāmyavāda, Bose's original political ideology.
