    Abstract

    Identification app. (e.g., a flow cytometer) which comprises a chamber having >=1 buffer fluid inlets and a plurality of sample fluid inlets, the chamber being configured so that the buffer fluid focuses the sample fluid into sample fluid streams which are, along with the buffer fluid, contained in a single laminar flow, is described in which the app. is provided with means for directing optical excitation simultaneously at a plurality of the sample fluid streams to allow parallel fluorescence and/or scattering measurements. Identification app.which comprises a chamber having >=1 buffer fluid inlets and >=1 sample fluid inlets, the chamber being configured so that the buffer fluid focuses the sample fluid into >=1 sample fluid streams are also described IW the app. is provided with a collection outlet and a waste outlet in sepd. portions of the chamber, and means for directing the sample fluid stream towards the collection outlet as required by directly heating (e.g., using a laser) buffer fluid in a portion of the chamber which is located upstream of the collection outlet so as to modify the fluid properties of the buffer fluid.
