Identifying Opportunities to Improve the Efficiency of Power Transmission Through Existing Overhead Power Lines

    Research output: Book/ReportCommissioned report

    Abstract

The main objective of this project is to identify methods of improvement in the power transfer capacity through existing Overhead Power Lines (OHL) that require small modifications of the structure, thereby keeping the cost and permission requirements at low levels. In particular, (at this stage) these methods involve the increase of the power transfer capacity of an existing OHL structure through the re-conductoring of the line with larger all aluminium alloy conductor (AAAC) or aluminium conductor steel reinforced (ACSR) wires or the more advanced technological high temperature low sag (HTLS) conductors. This study investigates these options and their effects considering the overall OHL system and not only the conductor. This, therefore, requires the selection of an OHL structure in the initial stage, based on which subsequent analysis and results will be presented; however, this does not limit the application of the methodology only to the particular OHL design chosen.
