Abstract
Much as Giovanni Sartori predicted, ideological polarisation is intimately related to a number of central political processes. To start with, it is related to the quality of democratic governance: high and low polarisation levels contribute to a deficient performance of democracy, On the other hand, levels of ideological polarisation are hard to predict. intitutional and conjunctural factors are only modestly related -- with the one exception of federalism. Last but not least: polarisation is different in different parts of Europe: it is rising in the postcommunist East, declining in the centre, and varying in the Sooth of Eurpe.
