Research output: Chapter in Book/Conference proceedingChapter

Abstract

In this chapter, we provide suggestions how to improve the operations management (OM) performance of units, with the use of the concepts and theories described in the theory part. It is written for students of healthcare management who would like to do a thesis work on a Health Services Operations Management topic concerning units in healthcare organisations.

We start with an overview of possible topics of research within a unit: strategic level (size of a unit, performance targets, longer term resources requirements), tactical level (staff planning, capacity plan, delivery process design), operational level (scheduling of patients and staff, workload management, throughput and waiting time).

Then we provide suggestions for research on unit OM during the different steps in the design study: problem definition, analysis and diagnosis, solution design, implementation, evaluation.

Finally, we provide case elaborations for the possible topics of research, including suggestions for literature and links to the case studies in Chapters 11–17.
