    Abstract

The Straits of Messina and its surroundings are tectonically active, but in spite of their hazard potential, modern geophysical data are lacking. In order to bridge this gap we carried out a multichannel seismic survey aimed at: i) investigating the occurrence of the Taormina Fault, inferred to occur along the coast between Taormina and Messina; ii) outlining the regional fault pattern in the area of the Messina 1908 earthquake; and iii) addressing the instability offshore of Mt. Etna. Preliminary results show the followings: i) our data failed to image the Taormina Fault, whereas the whole sector straddling the coastline has been tilted; ii) the best imaged faults in the Messina Straits occur on the Calabrian side; and iii) a large submarine slide, longer than 10 km and thicker than 400 m, has been imaged offshore Mt. Etna.
