Abstract

This is a remarkable book that offers rich and insightful data on what has been becoming an increasingly popular international trend–advanced school autonomy, which in England’s case is enacted through the academies programme. Through increased freedom and independence academies can, theoretically, make adjustments to the school curriculum, the structure of the school day/term/year, staff’s pay and conditions etc., according to their own local needs. This book draws on evidence from an in-depth longitudinal case study in one of England’s earliest academies.
