Intensity of Brillouin scattering in molecular crystals

    Abstract

    Expressions are derived for the intensity of Brillouin scattering from molecular crystals. A molecular theory of the electric susceptibility is used to obtain the elasto-optic coefficients, which govern the effect of acoustic phonons in modulating the polarization induced by the incoming light. The crystal optical properties are taken into account in treating both the scattering and transmission through crystal surfaces, in planes containing two principal dielectric axes. The optical properties fix the scattering mode for a given geometry, and together with the local electric field affect the intensity. The results complement those for Raman scattering.
