Abstract

This paper aims to contribute to the literature on sustainable collaboration by introducing inter-organisational learning and knowledge transfer to the context of environmental interfirm alliances. The objective is to explain why environmental inter-firm alliances lead to enhanced environmental sustainability by reviewing existing literature on inter-firm knowledge transfer, inter-organisational learning and environmental sustainability. In order to explain the development of environmental capabilities and values through inter-partner learning; concepts such as absorptive capacity, disseminative capacity, learning and teaching intent, cognitive distance, exploitation and exploration are introduced.
