    Abstract

In Spring 1997, an experiment was carried out at the UMIST field site at Holme Moss with the use of hill cap cloud that forms at the site. The aim was to investigate the interaction of the Manchester urban plume with the cloud. The effects of the aerosol and trace gas properties on the microphysics and chemistry of the cloud were investigated as well as the role of the cloud in modifying the properties of the aerosol and trace gases emerging downwind of the cloud system. The effect of the more polluted urban air interacting with the cloud on the properties of the cloud and the processing of the aerosol passing through it and emerging downwind was contrasted with the results from earlier experiments.
