Research output: Chapter in Book/Conference proceedingChapterpeer-review

Abstract

This introduction provides the conceptual and thematic basis for the edited collection, highlighting contributions from early career researchers who offer new and critical perspectives on the study of white-collar and organizational crime. It opens by reviewing the fundamental debates surrounding the definition and scope of white-collar crime, recognizing the limitations of narrow conceptualizations, and advocating for a more nuanced understanding of harm, an understanding shaped by the dynamic interaction between individual motivations, organizational cultures, and global economic structures. The chapter highlights the diversity of approaches adopted in the volume, from theoretical contributions that rethink corporate crime and explore competing organizational subcultures, to empirical studies that examine compliance with anti-money laundering regulations, fraud in sport, and agri-food safety violations. Emphasis is placed on the innovative methodologies and frameworks employed including critical realism, factor survey techniques, and sensory criminology, which allow for a deeper understanding of the often-hidden mechanisms of white-collar and organizational crime. Finally, it situates the genesis of the book within the collaborative efforts of the Manchester Organisational Non-Compliance Initiative (MONI) and the EUROC network, reflecting a broader commitment to supporting early-career researchers and promoting international dialogue in the field of white-collar and organizational crime.
