Introduction to control of corrosion by environmental modification

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapter

    Abstract

This chapter provides an introduction to the available strategies for control of corrosion by environmental modification. Two scientifically fundamental approaches are discussed, which are identified as corrosive agent removal (CAR) and protective barrier inducement (PBI). For CAR, both gaseous and liquid environments are considered, and the removal of electrolyte and cathodic reactant are discussed. As regards PBI, the main focus is on the use of corrosion inhibitors in aqueous solutions. Their primary modes of operation in acidic and near-neutral conditions are outlined. © 2010 Copyright © 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
