    Abstract

Two novel metal phosphonates, Al5F(C4H 9PO3)6(OH)2(C4N 2H6)21 and Ga4F2(C 4H9PO3)8H5·(C 7N2H11) 2 have been prepared using an ionothermal approach and their structures solved using single-crystal X-ray diffraction. In 1, the breakdown of the ionic liquid solvent has occurred and a fragment of the cation coordinates to the aluminium in the structure. In 2, the ionic liquid cation acts as the template and is occluded. Compound 1 is a chain structure while compound 2 is molecular, unlike the vast majority of hydrothermally synthesised phosphonates, which are layered. © 2009 The Royal Society of Chemistry.
