    Abstract

The possibility that surfaces of YBa2Cu3O7-x may be intrinsically non-metallic is discussed in relation to recent photoemission data, which reveal an abnormally low density of states at the Fermi energy. A mechanism for electron localisation at the surface is presented, as well as alternative explanations for the photoemission data. © 1989 Springer-Verlag.
