Abstract

This volume presents the first comparative study of Jewish dissidence in the Eastern Bloc. Although acts of Jewish dissidence occurred across Soviet satellite countries from the early postwar years onwards, attention to date has focused on the important case of the Soviet Refuseniks of the 1970s and 1980s, who in turn inspired dissent in other Eastern Bloc countries. The volume studies select Jewish dissident movements and individuals against the backdrop of state-declared anti-Zionism and anti-Jewish purges in post-war Soviet satellite countries. In doing so, the volume’s contributions argue that Jewish dissidence played a key role in the downfall of the Iron Curtain.
