    Abstract

The early stages of the shear banding instability was discussed using the nonlocal Johnson-Segalman model with a 'two fluid' coupling of flow to micellar concentration. The spinodal region was found to be broadened by an extent that increased with proximity to a underlying (zero-shear) CH fluid-fluid (φ) demixing instability. A model which captures a smooth crossover from shear banding instabilities that were perturbed by concentration coupling to demixing instabilities was also presented.
