Abstract
This is an attempt to map the structure of utterance meaning, as construed by Anscombre and Ducrot’s Argumentation Theory, onto the structure of brain maps, as proposed by Damasio (2010) It is argued that the level of correlation to be found between the two types of structure is too systematic to be due to chance. It is proposed that Damasio’s convergence-divergence zone model of memory encoding and recall should be able to provide an account of how the structure of brain maps might have been inherited by the structure of language.
