Abstract
This paper briefly reviews the evidence for lake acidification and its causes. Attempts to control and manage the problem are summarized. The critical loads approach to reducing acid deposition is described and exemplified using data from freshwaters in the UK. The potential for the chemical and biological recovery of acidified lakes is discussed. Future issues are highlighted, including the need for effective monitoring of acidified lakes and the growing importance of nitrogen deposition. -from Authors
