Abstract

This chapter offers a comparative analysis of the captaincies-general in Spain and Spanish America and of the profile of men appointed to these offices between 1700 and 1746. It demonstrates that Spanish American captaincies-general were usually of inferior standing and less prestige than their counterparts in Spain. However, the transition from Hapsburg to Bourbon rule and the gradual 'professionalisation' of strategic captaincies-general in the Americas transformed them into stepping stones for ambitious officers seeking social and professional promotion whose careers spanned the Spanish Atlantic. The chapter demonstrates that studying captaincies-general and the men appointed to them from a perspective that incorporates the whole Spanish world allows us to better understand the complex, and changing, relationships between different parts of early modern transoceanic empires.
