Abstract
In this paper, we discuss the objectives, organization, and content of the French Studies curriculum at the University of Manchester, with particular reference to the importance attributed to the acquisition of the target language. In the course of the exposition, we point out certain problems that we perceive the Mancunian model to have, and we briefly present a specific pedagogical initiative which is currently at an experimental stage, namely the use of Enquiry-Based Learning in our French-language modules.
