Abstract

This paper discusses how more relational forms of engagement have been developed in an English state school, not merely through structural and organisational change (becoming Co-operative), but have been fundamentally underpinned by a commitment and belief in the value of a particular pedagogy; the pedagogy of the Arts. This raises an interesting point when reflecting on the potential for more relational understandings of student engagement in school, regarding the links between a relational approach and specific approaches to pedagogical practice. Is there something about the teaching of the Arts in particular that facilitates an inherent focus on the three core elements of a relational approach to engagement?
