Abstract

This edited collection brings together leading historians of humanitarian aid around a new research topic: the humanitarian exhibition. Since 1867 humanitarians have used exhibitions, shows, itinerant displays, films, books and festivals to explain to the wider public the humanitarian needs of people benefiting from their work. Through these representations, humanitarians have sought to define their self-image, communicate their purpose, illustrate and legitimate their interventions abroad and in conflict situations. This book breaks new ground and casts a new light on the history of humanitarianism, its diplomacy and its social and political context.
