Abstract
This ethnographic study of the English Defence League addresses directly one of the core
research questions of the MYPLACE project; young people’s receptivity to contemporary
forms of populism or extremism1
. Academic and public discussion in the UK to date focus
on two such movements attractive to young people: Islamism; and extreme/far right
movements. The survey element of the MYPLACE project (WP4) measured the extent of this
receptivity and its correlation (via contrasting field sites) to the two variables identified as
most significantly influencing receptivity to radical movements in the region of study
(community segregation/integration and socio-economic inequalities/deprivation). This
ethnographic study sought to explore directly young people’s activism in a movement in one
of those identified fields – the far right2
