    Abstract

The magnetic moment of a Cu capped thin film of magnetite (Fe 3O 4), grown epitaxially on Pt(111) was investigated. The layer thickness of the magnetite was found to be 53±6 Å by using polarized neutron reflectivity (PNR) data. It was observed that the average magnetic moment of the Fe 3O 4 layer was 2.8±0.3 μ B, smaller than the value of bulk Fe 3O 4 which was 4.1 μ B.
