Managing Fieldwork across Contexts: Modes and Methods for Studying Child Wellbeing

Research output: Chapter in Book/Conference proceeding › Chapter › peer-review

Abstract

This chapter delves into the practical aspects of data collection, focusing on various methodological approaches and strategies crucial for effective research. It explores centralized and decentralized approaches, comparing their efficiency in managing data and resources across different locations. The chapter addresses fieldwork logistics, including planning, coordination, and adapting to local contexts. A significant portion of the chapter is dedicated to reviewing five core data collection methods: Computer-Assisted Personal Interviewing (CAPI), Computer-Assisted Video Interviewing (CAVI), Computer-Assisted Telephone Interviewing (CATI), Online Survey Tools, and Personal Mobile Technologies. The chapter enhances its practical value by incorporating examples from large European longitudinal studies, illustrating how these methods are applied in real-world research scenarios. This comprehensive overview provides researchers with essential insights into modern data collection techniques and their implementation in large-scale studies, highlighting the importance of adapting methodologies to specific research contexts.
