    Abstract

MapReduce is a new parallel programming paradigm proposedto process large amount of data in a distributed setting.Since its introduction, there have been efforts to improvethe architecture of this model making it more efficient, secure and scalable. In parallel with these developments, there are also efforts to implement and deploy MapReduce, and one of its most popular open source implementationis Hadoop. Some more recent practical MapReduce implementationshave made architectural changes to the originalMapReduce model, e.g., those by Facebook and IBM. Thesearchitectural changes may have implications to the designof solutions to secure MapReduce. To inform these changesand to serve any future design of such solutions, this paperattempts to build a generic MapReduce computation modelcapturing the main features and properties of the most recentMapReduce implementations.
