Abstract
Reduction in cost and weight will continue to dominate materials developments for airframes. Metallic materials will remain major structural materials with advanced processing and component manufacturing methods playing a key role. Materials and processes will be developed to offer mass and part reduction, complex shape manufacture, reduced scrap, improved fatigue life, design optimization and generally improved corrosion resistance. This will significantly reduce the amount of experimental development work and cut the time from concept to final design.
