    Abstract

We investigate the numerical resolution required for a chaotically advected material interface, the goal being accurate calculation of striation widths generated by fluid mixing. Our new criterion for adequate resolution demonstrates that a previous criterion is unduly pessimistic about the prospects for resolution of thin striations. We recommend a protocol for numerical calculations of striation widths to ensure adequate resolution. © 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
