    Abstract

This paper investigates how to measure ‘the ripples of volunteering’. It presents a combined systems practice and SROI (Social Return on Investment) approach to appreciate and measure the value of volunteering. Whilst the systems thinking approach is applied to identify the main stakeholders and scoping of the work, SROI is used to establish the outcome and impact of volunteering. The setting is British Waterways, a public corporation that manages the nation’s canals and river navigations in England, Scotland and Wales. Lessons learned are discussed.
