Abstract
The Department of Medical Biophysics in the University of Manchester provides research training in the application of physical and engineering sciences to biomedical problems. Graduates are recruited from a wide range of disciplines including physics, computer science, and the biological sciences. They are offered projects which teach them how to apply their knowledge. Inevitably this training also broadens their outlook: physicists are confronted with medical problems, while biologists become familiar with computers. Unless they already hold a higher degree with a substantial research component, students register for the MSc initially; they may, if they wish, transfer to a PhD course subject to satisfactory progress. Subsequently, they make their careers in industry, hospitals, and education. A wide spectrum of research is in progress ranging from digital radiology to electron microscopy of the fibers secreted by cells in culture.
