Abstract

Micro-PIXE and EPMA analyses of platinum-group minerals from placer deposits are being used in an attempt to determine whether the PGM are derived from ultramafic rocks by weathering, or formed directly in the placer by chemical accretion. Initial results from this combined study pin-point the complementary nature of the two techniques and demonstrate the greater usefulness of PIXE as an exploratory tool in rapid areal analysis of these compositionally complex minerals.
