New approaches in black box group theory

    Abstract

    We introduce a new approach in black box group theorywhich deals with black box group problems in the category of blackboxes and their morphisms. This enables us to enrich black box groupsby actions of outer automorphisms such as Frobenius maps or graphautomorphisms of simple groups of Lie type. As an application of thisnew technique, we present a number of new results, including a solutionof an old problem about constructing unipotent elements in groups ofLie type of odd characteristic.
