Abstract

The 3D state space approach (SSA) allows accurate description of composite plate behavior, regardless of plate thickness. A new formulation of the SSA is proposed here for the hitherto unexplored case of an asymmetrically supported plate. This solution takes into account all independent elastic constants and satisfies all governing equations and boundary conditions. The new formulation is first derived and then compared to predictions by alternative analytical solutions including classical plate theory as well as the finite element method (FEM) for a number of case studies. Globally, the SSA solution compared well and produced greater accuracy than the FEM model.
