    Abstract

Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) competencies for nursing practice fall into four key domains and apply to all branches of nursing. They are mandatory for registration as a nurse and encompass one of eight standards that govern nursing practice. There are also two standards for post-registration education and practice (PREP), updated in August 2004Competencies for nursing children and young people build on the core NMC standards to emphasise the wide-ranging principles of family-centred care and, negotiation and empowerment for children, young people and their families. The Royal College of Nursing has outlined guidance for children???s nurses in a framework for both core and specialist practice, using a broad evidence base.
