Abstract
Non-representational theories have been a part of geography’s history for the past 30 or so years. It is only in the past decade, however, that they have gained traction in a range of sub-disciplinary areas and have moved beyond the small group of names who proffered the approach around its initial emergence in the 1990s/2000s. This chapter traces the origins of non-representational theories, situating this within the social sciences more broadly. We highlight some key tenets of the approach and consider some of the different areas of geography within which it has been used.
