Abstract
Although the notion of equity is considered paramount in the emerging paradigm of sustainable urban mobility, mobility planning has been accused of contributing to the production and consolidation of social and spatial inequalities related to the provision and organization of urban public transport, especially in the context of developing countries. This article investigates the extent to which planners working in Brazilian cities are aware of inequities related to transportation and how they understand the role of transportation in relation to social objectives. Unlike what the literature suggests, results of the survey conducted for this study indicate that, in Brazil, transport planners recognize certain associations between socioeconomic deprivation and deficiencies in the provision of urban public transport, but they do not necessarily identify factors in the planning process that lead to the production of inequalities. Nor do they understand the idea of social equity as central to the paradigm of sustainable urban mobility.
