On the relation between heat wave events and fire risk indices over Chalkidiki- Greece

Abstract

The objective on this study is to find out a relation between the heat wave events and appropriate fire risk indices, during a significant five-year period, over Chalkidiki, Greece. The research on the heat wave events is carried out by using the modified biometeorological index New Summer Simmer Index (SSI΄) for the summer months. For this purpose, the hourly values of air temperature and relative humidity from the Meteorological Station of Kassandria-Chalkidiki, are used. The study goes on with the numerical evaluation of the potential risk fire, by using the average monthly values of temperature, relative humidity, wind speed and the sum of monthly rainfall values, in order to calculate the Canadian Forest Fire Weather Index (FWI) and the Angstrӧm Index (I). The process of the SSI΄ and Angstrom Index is performed on hourly, daily and monthly basis, while the process of the SSI΄ and FWI is performed on a monthly basis. The study is continued with the comparison of the calculated theoretical results against the actual recorded heat wave events and the natural fires for the study area. Finally, the calculated indices and events are evaluated, taking into consideration the climatic change effect.
