Abstract
A control and communication system is described, which forms part of the power electronic excitation system for a superconducting synchronous machine. The communication channel uses a single slip-ring connection and provides feedback of the superconductor current, transmits status and control signals in either direction, and provides power rails for the rotor-mounted electronics. The rotor electronics operate at cryogenic temperatures and use an 8051 microcontroller. Full design and operational details are provided.
