Optimizing Urban Mobility : A Life Cycle Management Framework for Smart Bike-sharing

Research output: Contribution to conferenceAbstractpeer-review

Abstract

Smart bike-sharing projects have been widely promoted worldwide, facilitating micro-mobility for dwellers. However, the excessive launch of bikes has encroached upon pedestrian pathways, thereby burdening governments with management. Similarly, with the termination of certain projects, abandoned stations and mountains of discarded bikes have become additional burdens on urban infrastructure. Therefore, this paper aims to address these management challenges by implementing life cycle management strategies which can improve businesses by addressing real-world phenomena for all stakeholders, linking sustainability and organizational performance to business value and value creation. The life cycle of smart bike-sharing projects has been proposed through a literature review method, encompassing three phases: development, operation, and termination. Each phase comprises two stages, totaling six stages, including design, planning, execution, updating, recycling, and disposal. Then, how smart bike-sharing companies can apply life cycle management to their management strategies to enhance the sustainability of operations will be explored using a case study method. The final life cycle framework can serve as a practical guide for industry practitioners and policymakers engaged in the development and implementation of smart bike-sharing systems within a city, assisting in navigating the complex process from launching to terminating these projects, ultimately sustaining further mobility and urban development.
