Abstract
Background: The circumferential resection margin (CRM) in oesophageal cancer is an important prognostic factor, however the definition of what constitutes an involved CRM remains contentious. The Royal College of Physicians defines an involved CRM as the presence of tumour cells within 1mm of the cut edge of the specimen, whereas the College of American Pathologists considers an involved CRM only when tumour cells are present at the cut edge. The aim of this study was to determine whether there was a difference between these two definitions in terms of early recurrence and survival.
