Parallel between global migration and cross-cultural management: hybridization and polarization

Abstract

Continued increase in flow of global migration calls for a more in-depth scholarly understanding of the changing dynamics of migration and its contribution to managerial practices. A careful examination of migration history reveals a close relationship between global migration trends and cross-cultural exchanges. We believe that a closer look at the (past and current) migration trends offers several helpful explanations to understand the relationship between the movement of people and the development of cross-cultural management (CCM) as a field. Through a quasi-historical review, we aim to make three contributions. Firstly, in demonstrating the importance of considering global migration trends in the study of CCM, we argue that the recurring themes within the scholarship of CCM parallel with the changing global migration trends.
