    Abstract

A crucial feature of the Boundary Element Method (BEM) in comparison with the Finite Element Method (FEM) is the reduction in nodes (equations to be solved) because these are limited to the surface of the analysed body. On the other hand BEM element matrices become large as problem sizes grow and the need to handle fully populated , non-symmetric global matrices leads to challenging analyses which are best realized when parallel algorithms are used. ParaFEM (ParaFEM Web Reference, 2004) is an open source parallel MPI library originally developed for the FEM. The present paper demonstrates the ease with which ParaFEM was used to parallelise BEM calculations. Example problems demonstrate good parallel scaling.
