Abstract
There have been dramatic shifts in patterns of sexual activity in Western countries over the last 200 years: what have been the consequences of these changes for intimate personal relationships? To understand the impact of social change in the present, we must first get a sense what people did in the past. But our view of ‘the past’ is often based on misconceptions or sweeping generalizations. This chapter examines social change in personal life, and explodes some popular myths about sex and intimacy in past times.
