    Abstract

Expressions are derived for the optical activity of a molecular crystal showing the contributions arising from molecular chirality and lattice chirality separately and in combination. The molecular chirality, expressed via a generalized field-gradient polarizability, modifies the effective molecular polarizability in the crystal environment. This modification implies different Davydov splittings in the optical spectra of crystals of enantiomeric molecules that adopt the same chiral structure.
