Polarizabilities and local fields in a diacetylene monomer and polymer crystal

    Abstract

    Refractive index data for the diacetylene PTS and its polymer are analysed to yield polarizabilities and local electric fields. Along the polymer chain, the polarizability per repeating unit is roughly double that in the monomer. The local field along the polymer chain is essentially equal to the macroscopic field. This result agrees with that for a needle-shaped cavity, but not with the anisotropic Lorentz approximation. It means that the crystal nonlinear susceptibility along the chain is essentially that of the chain itself, with no local-field enhancement.
