Polarizability of aromatic hydrocarbon ions

    Abstract

    Simple MO theory is used to show how the polarizability of an alternant aromatic hydrocarbon cation can lie between that of the neutral molecule and that of the anion. This ordering is confirmed by finite-field ab initio calculations on naphthalene and its dication and dianion.
