Abstract

Pornography is both extremely popular, and controversial, within society. This chapter offers an introduction to sociological approaches to pornography. Within this chapter, I offer an overview of how social scientists can approach pornography as an element of sex work, as a consumer product, and give an overview of some of the social impacts of pornography while reflecting on the limitations of existing research into the area. This chapter also considers how rapid growth of online pornography and sex work has transformed and changed the adult industry. Finally, this chapter explores some theoretical approaches to pornography, focusing especially on contentions within feminist theory, and the work of Michel Foucault.
